Tell us about yourself!
With over 20 years of experience in public health, I’ve had the opportunity to serve in various roles, including health education specialist, emergency preparedness coordinator, epidemiologist, manager, and researcher. Throughout my career, I’ve developed a strong passion for bringing strategic approaches to public health, with a particular focus on equity, evidence-based practice, and practice-based research. Over time, I’ve also discovered a love for writing, which I channel as the leader of KHI’s Transforming Public Health Blog (see here: https://www.khi.org/transforming-public-health-for-the-21st-century-bridging-theory-to-practice/). I invite you to explore my latest thoughts and ideas or to reach out if you’re interested in collaborating on a post.
Why did you pursue a DrPH?
Before starting the DrPH, I would have said my primary goal was to improve my research skills.
However, now I realize that the DrPH has enriched me in many other ways. It has helped me find my voice, become a more strategic thinker, and feel more confident leading in both official and unofficial roles.
What are you currently excited about in your job?
I'm most excited about collaborating with public health innovators to create and work towards a visionary future for public health in Kansas and beyond.
If you could write a book about your life, what would the title be and why?
If I were to write a book, l'd title it Just Dive In. Reflecting on my career, I realize that some of the most rewarding experiences came from taking leaps of faith, even when had no idea how things would turn out. In the end, those ventures proved to be invaluable.
What is something interesting about you that we should know?
Not sure if it is interesting, but I love horror and sci-fi movies.
