Dr. Samia Hussein
Tell us about yourself.
I was born in Cairo, Egypt and raised between Egypt and the Bronx, NY. My undergrad was in Biology at CCSU, MPH from UConn, and recently graduated with my DrPH from Mercer University with a concentration in Diverse Populations and Health Equity. I have worked in non-profit, hospital, state, and consulted for many organizations. My passion lies in health equity, organizational leadership, and global health. I have several certifications and speaking engagements I won't bore you with! I have always been in the helping profession and my love for public health stemmed from my interest in systems change in the medical field. On a personal level, I enjoy traveling, meeting new people, listening to Afrobeats music, spending time with family/friends, and growing myself personally and professionally.
Why did you pursue a DrPH?
It seems like everyone nowadays has an MPH, I wanted to grow myself personally and professionally to stand out. I am also interested in advanced leadership positions to be able make an impact on a larger scale.
What are you currently excited about in your job?
I am excited about our new Champions for Diversity & Health Equity program and our research projects that will look at evaluating DEI programs among the behavioral public health workforce to measure impact on patient outcomes.
If you could write a book about your life, what would the title be and why?
The Chapters Life: Where to go and how to get there. This title resonates with me because I always feel like I am in the middle of many chapters of my life and always looking for the next thing to work on for growth.
What is something interesting about you that we should know?
I graduated high school at age 16, college at 20. I speak Arabic fluently. I also make some banging Egusi soup (for those that don't know it is a Nigerian dish).
